If there is a problem with your Social Security Number (SSN), the Social Security Administration will send you a letter.
They generally only contact you if you have requested a call or have a pending matter with them, but never to:
• Threaten you with arrest or legal action.
• Suspend your Social Security Number.
• Demand immediate payment from you.
• Request payment in cash, gift card, prepaid debit card, electronic money, or bank transfer.
• Ask for gift card numbers over the phone or request that you send or transfer cash.
• Ask for personal information or banking details to give you a Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA).
