If you lose your Social Security card, you may not need a replacement card. In most cases, knowing your Social Security Number (SSN) is enough. However, if you do need a replacement card, you can apply online or in person.
The easiest way to request a replacement SSN card is online through a personal and free my Social Security account (available only in English). Visit www.ssa.gov/ssnumber (available only in English) and answer some questions to determine the best way to apply. If you cannot use your my Social Security account to request a replacement card, you can start the process online (available only in English) and complete it at your local Social Security office or card center, usually in less time.
If you cannot complete your application online, you will need to provide the necessary documents. We need to see different documents depending on your citizenship and the type of card you are requesting. If you do not start your application online, you will need to complete and print your application for a replacement Social Security Number card (available only in English) and bring it to your local Social Security office (although the local office locator is only available in English, you only need to enter your zip code to find the nearest local office).
There are no fees for a Social Security Number card. This service is free.
